The civil society organizations in Korea have been successful in the reform movement throughout the social and political reform period. It is believed that the election defeat movement of 16th general election was very successful. The home page of national election campaign coalition, http://www.ngokorea.or had 600,000 clicks after opening the home page and 910,000 times right before the election.
This kind of rapid change of knowledge and information revolutions changed the way of civil protest and paradigm per se all over the world. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of political reform movements focusing on 'election defeat movement' of the 2000 general election.
The election defeat movement was successful to some degree. The movement period was short but a high defeating rate. The implications of civil society organization's election defeat movement are as follows: First, the citizen movement formed a broad network. This can be possible by using internet. Without internet it is very hard to gather many citizen groups together as a coalition. Second, there are many capable protest leaders. This made the movement professional. Third, the composite strategies produced more movement's visibility and then attracted mass media's attention.
