As the importance of supply chain is being recognized in a wide variety of industries, the operational level of the supply chain called Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) becomes increasingly important, since it can provide the detailed plans on all the activities occurring within an enterprise for the coordinated decision-making among the participating enterprises of the whole supply chain network. This paper presents a generic framework for building APS systems that can effectively cope with such difficulties as problem modeling and computational complexity arising from large scale scheduling problems, especially in the batch scheduling area. Within the framework, three agents are interacting with each other to collaboratively solve the entire problem: Schema, Modeling, and Coordinating Agent. The Schema Agent is to represent the domain problem along with its constraints and cost components. The Modeling Agent creates a constraint model and constructs schedules while attempting to minimize the total schedule cost. The Coordinating Agent controls the overall interactions between the two agents, and if necessary, partitions the entire problem into sub-problems to reduce the computational complexity, and calls the Modeling Agent repeatedly for the solution of each sub-problem. The advantage of the framework includes rapid system development by modular design, capability to deal with largescale real world problems, reusability of the scheduling components, and agent-based coordination for e-commerce environment. Based on the framework, a prototype system named COBRA was implemented and applied to large batch scheduling problems.
