Brian Friel, who was born and brought up in Derry, Northern Ireland, has adhered to the probing of the problems of Northern Ireland in his plays. The Freedom of the City(1973) deals with the political situation of Northen Ireland: the civil rights marches in the late 1960s and the conflict between the Protestant majority and the Catholic minority.
Three main characters in the play, Lily, Skinner and Michael, who belong to the Catholic working class and Derry citizens, participate in the civil rights march. They run from the CS gas and happen to enter the parlor of Guildhall, the Derry city hall. Surrounded with British soldiers and policemen, they spend their time talking and drinking. They reveal themselves to each other through small talks and ultimately they are shot to death by the British soldiers.
This play can be political propaganda but Friel achieves an artistic work with an objective view. The main characters represent the Catholic working class in Northern Ireland. He dramatizes them as humanized and individualized. Especially Lily has a sense of humor and maternal love. Also, Skinner and Lily show their vital energy through their dressing up and play acting. Friel dramatizes the main characters on the basis of the real life of the Catholic working class in Northern Ireland. He succeeds in showing the positive and living image.
On the other hand, the many minor characters such as Judge, Policeman, Priest, Balladeer, Professor, and Reporter represent public officials and the dominant class. Friel dramatizes them inhuman. They comment on the events in the Guildhall but do not describe it exactly. They distort the event and the lives of the three characters. They all lack humanity and individuality. They are kind of stereotypical characters as well as flat characters.
Brian Friel as a Northern Ireland dramatist tries to show positive characteristics drawn from the real life of the Catholic working class in Northern Ireland.
