This paper attempts to examine the effects which Korean-French Treaty(1886) gave on Protestant missionary activities in modem Korea. The majority of early Protestant missionaries in Korea were American citizens, while most Roman Catholic missionaries were French priests. The status and rights of Protestant missionaries, therefore, were determined by Korean-American Treaty(1882), and Catholic missionaries had a direct relationship with Korean-French Treaty.
Since Korean-American Treaty had no mention about the freedom of Christian mission, American Protestant missionaries could not propagate gospel legitimately in the street. Instead, they had to be satisfied with indirect mission activities such as medical mission and education mission. Contrary to Korean-American Treaty, Korean-French Treaty laid a foundation for religious freedom in Korea. Immediately after the sign of treaty, French government told Catholic priests that Korean government could not more persecute missionaries and could not stop their propagating the gospel among Korean. Therefore French priests started to evangelize enthusiastically Korean people around the Korean Peninsula. Korean government reluctantly acknowledged their activities.
Though Protestant missionaries were not French citizen, they could enjoy the same privilege, which French missionaries achieved in the mission field, by "most-favored-nation clause". By that time, Korean government prevented the foreigners from buying a house inland and staying long there. Catholic priests, nevertheless, bought a house for mission station and dwelt, for long, for the sake of doing missionary work. Such a custom was overlooked tacitly. Protestant missionaries, a rival to Catholic missionaries in mission field, took advantage of such a custom, by taking Catholic priests' case as "precedent". For example, Protestant missionaries could succeed in achieving their object, taking "Robert case" as a precedent of "Taeku Case".
In conclusion, Korean-French Treaty gave much influences on Protestant mission as well as Roman Catholic mission in modem Korea. Strictly speaking, Protestant missionaries actively took advantage of the fruits which Korean-French Treaty provided Catholic missionaries.
