Though the structural study of the folktale has been receiving eves increasing attention, what is the meaning of the structural types is not clear yet. This paper is to discover the aesthetic and social meaning of iwo structural types in Korean folktale.
Type A is consist of the repetition of “two motifeme sequence,” according to Alan Dundes’ term: Unhappiness and Unexpected Happiness. Type B is also consist of the repitition of another “two motifeme sequence”: Unexpected Unhappiness and Happiness. These two types seem to be very similar to each other, but they are quite different. Type A means a fatalism in structure, which says that any human unhappiness must be overcome by the unexpected happiness which some supernatural helper give. But type B means an anti-fatalism in structure, which says that any unexpected unhappiness caused by supernatural or social unjustice must be overcome by the happiness which human beings gain through endeavour.
These two structural types appear to have the same meanings in the ballad, romance, and novel. The present study can be developed in larger scale.
