The Gwacheon Hanmadang Festival has been developed by four art directors focusing mainly on Madang Theaters and Outdoor Theaters. Its journey was never easy with its name being changed as many as five times in eight years and it had as many as four art directors. However it has finally been successful in establishing its identity and taking its place as one of the representative Korean Performance and Art Festivals through private and the public sponsorship.
If we take a closer look at the performances of the Gwacheon Hanmadang Festival, which started from the「27th ITI General Meeting and World Performance and Art Festival」held in 1997, each festival showed different tendencies according to the intentions of the art directors, despite the basic character that mainly focuses on Madang Guk and Outdoor Theater.
It was the then President of Korean People's Theater Association, Im, Jin taek who bore the responsibility of starting the festival and stipulating its characteristics. He opened the festival as the Chairman of the Executive Committee on the lst Festival and the Chairman of the same committee on the 2nd Festival and an art director. What he focused on the most while organizing the festival was the popularization of Madang Guk by making people have a new recognition of it, which was on the decline according to the political changes.
Starting from the circumstances when it was impossible to use the term, Madang Guk, due to the separation from the Korean People's Theater Association and invite a lot of works, the 3rd 「Madang' 99 Gwacheon World Performance Art Festival」was held with the Chairman of the Executive Committee, Jeong, Jin su as an axis without an art director. The 3rd Art Festival accepted various genres such as dances, music, and plays aiming for the form of general outdoor performances including Madang Guk by re establishing the characteristics of the function, The Art Festival consisted of various genres of performances like plays, music, and dances, which were mostly popular works that were easy to understand.
The 4th 'Gwacheon Madang Guk Festival 2000'established the characteristics of the Madang Guk festival more firmly by disentangling the complicated matters with the Korean People's Theater Association and amending regulations. In addition, it came to be endowed with the characteristic of the festival that the considerations for the residents were strengthened, which Gwacheon city intended to do. This tendency has been continued all the way through the 6th Madang Guk Festival and the Art Director, Park, In bae played a central role in it.
The 7th festival started under the name of 'Gwacheon Hanmadang Festival'. As you can know from its title, it aimed to change from the Madang Guk into the Outdoor Theater centered one embracing the Madang Guk, and The Art Director, 1m, Su taek was in the center of this change. He ensured that the festival should be directed toward artistic qualities from the beginning. This tendency has been continued all the way through the 8th Madang Guk Festival.
