Most of the evacuation efficiency analysis methods are designed to calculate the shortest evacuation time based on the length of the evacuation route. However, this study reveals that the spatial configuration is as much important a factor as the physical distance, and therefore suggests an evacuation efficiency analysis method for High-rise Buildings based on such issues. Under an emergency situation, the occupant first identifies the final destination, then maps out the shortest route to that destination based on what they see, and finally follows that route to evacuate. Therefore, an evacuation method should consider the visibility conditions that the spaces provide as well as the physical distance. The method proposed in this paper is constructed by calculating the visual depth by substituting the euclidean distance factor for the edges of the visibility graph, and is a quantitative method of calculating the evacuation efficiency taking both visual depth and physical distance into consideration. In this paper, this new method is applied to an actual high-rise building, and its results are compared with those of SIMULEX, the evacuation simulation program. Because the analysis method suggested in this paper generates the quantitative indices of evacuation efficiency for the planning configuration of a building, it can be used to easily evaluate the evacuation efficiency of multiple schemes, and also be used to work out evacuation planning of buildings that are already built.
