On the occasion of Hwang's research achievement and the following syndrome Korea and world have faced a danger that life is manipulated, instrumentalized, and that bio-industry is oriented to a commercial interest, The arbitrary genetic manipulation will produce an irreversible destruction of the life order. As an undertaking of Babel tower building in the 21st century it can produce a kind of result such as destruction of mankind.
His research team does not see the embryo as a life. It views the position of the embryo as a mere cell lump. It acknowledges the embryo after plantation in the uterus as a life. His team regards embryonic stem cell as a mere cell lump. The act to produce another cell lump from one cell lump makes no ethical problems at all. Such an embryonic study is a crucial medical act in future for patients suffering from incurable disease and their families.
Hwang's team has a buddhistic life-view of life transmigration to save a human, a big cell lump through a cell, a minute unit of life. Such a view that an embryo is a mere cell lump has a high possibility to expand into materialism that an adult is also a cell lump. However, the Christian bio-ethics argues human life is itself a purpose, it can not become an instrument. This defames the human dignity.
1) Facing the technology that does not stop but accelerate by the motivation of utilitarianism and commercialism, Korean church needs to be aware of the life ethics and to carry out the life ethics campaigns to practise it. 2) Life engineers need to develop the adult stem research that does not destroy embryonic life and to make efforts to practise it on the suffering patients. 3) Christianity needs to set up the life ethics appropriate to genetic engineering and to suggest it as an alternative to scientists and medical practicians.
The scientists dealing with human life are asked to be ethically responsible for life and to get an attitude to follow the social consensus. Korean church needs to reconfirm the absolute sovereignty of God over life and to plant a right vision of communal value such as life reverence and human right.
