Fruit and collar rot of watermelon caused by a species of Phytophthora was found in Sungju-Kun in 1988 and in Koryoung-Kun in 1989, respectively. The causal pathogen was identified as Phytophthora drechsleri Tucker on the basis of morphological and pathogenic characters. The sporangia were apapillate, non-eaducous, proliferated internally and were not produced on general solid media but produced on V-8 juice-soil filtrate agar. Sporangia were ovate, 31.0－77.7×23.3－46.5μ with an average of 53.4×36.1μ in dimension. The isolates were heterothallic and anthridia were amphigynous to oogonla. The fungus was able to grow at 35℃ and was pathogenic on seedlings of watermelon, melon, and cucumber but not on seedlings of pepper and squash.
