The objectives of this study are to examine the specific roadside tree plantation status and road environment of cities/counties in Kyonggi province and to provide basic data for future roadside tree management policies by conducting a field survey on 41 roads of various types in 7 major cities with a focus on the standard of planted roadside trees and plantation status, the impact of surrounding environment on roadside trees, and creation of roadside environment by roadside trees and analyzing the survey results. The study result shows that, first, roadside tree species did not vary by road types. As for the size of tree species, they were mostly medium-height trees. Only in seven sites or 17%, flowering plants or shrubs were planted at the lower layer of roadside trees. It indicated that, if possible, plantation should be created in two rows along roadside within urban area and be linked with buffer green area, and a plantation plan including plantation of lower layer of roadside trees should be developed. Second, as for barriers for the growth of roadside trees, they were in an order of telegraph poles and electric wires, narrow sidewalks, and goods piled on roads. Therefore, in long term, laying electric wires underground using utility-pipe conduits and voluntary management by residents through ownership of roadside trees seemed necessary. Third, signboards were often blocked by roadside tree crowns indicating that management including tree species selection and roadside tree pruning needs to be improved. Also, it was analyzed that a median strip should be obligatory in order to create a canopy on roads.
