The purposes of this study is to examine digital infrastructure divide among cities based on the spatial structure of internet backbone networks in Korea. As the internet grows in popularity, internet backbones in Korea continue to increase in capacity and geographic reach to meet market demand. The spatial structure of commercial internet backbones reflects a competitive and privatized market for service provisions. According to the results of each city's accessibility based on internet backbone topology, the accessibilities among cities show large differences. The larger cities with many links are, the higher accessibilities appear. Profit-seeking ISP firms continue to upgrade infrastructure in selected large urban centers, creating an uneven spatial distribution of information carrying capacity. The result of this study shows that the internet selectively connects large cities and then intensifies the urban digital infrastructure divide. Seoul benefits from infrastructure upgrades which increase capacity and extend the geographic reach of backbone networks.
