Traffic congestion results in a great deal of economic, social and environmental losses. As such, it has become one of the most important issues in urban and transport planning. Efforts to solve traffic problems through sustainable urban forms should be understood within this context.
Recent research in advanced countries on the relationship between urban forms and traffic problems has shown that policies to reduce car traffic through the implementation of compact and mixed urban forms are difficult to implement because of current trends in urban development. e.g. suburbanization. Furthermore, a compact urban form that excludes most open spaces produces additional trips for leisure and recreation on weekends. This decreases the total amount of car traffic avoidances through the compact urban form. The research also shows that a higher transport price leads residences and workplaces to be located closer together, and that an appropriate residential density for comfortable living reduces additional weekend trips outside of cities. According to the results of the research, a sustainable urban form can be defined as an urban form with a self-reliant structure and mixed urban functions, which does not exceed the comfortable residential density level and thus results in fewer car trips and car-kilometers.
Based on this theoretical background, this study investigated the urban form polices in our spatial plans in order to enhance their effectiveness and thus mitigate traffic problems. With this objective in mind, the sustainable urban form was applied for the urban region of Kwangiu, the selected study area, in order to analyse the relationship between sustainable urban forms and traffic problems. Lastly, the models used for the study and the results of the scenario simulations using the models are presented.
