Currently, Korean economy suffers from serious decrease in various kind of investment activities and remarkable unemployment rate. Especially, construction activities shrink significantly.
Main purposes and contents of this study are as follows. First, this study tests whether construction investment motivates other economic activities by using Granger-Causality. Second, this study tries to investigate main sources of fluctuations in construction investment by using variance decomposition analysis based on structural VAR. Finally, the response behavior of construction investment to economic shocks, real and monetary shocks, is analyzed.
The empirical results show that construction investment causes variations in other economic activities, including consumption, investment, money, and GDP. Real shock is more important than monetary shock in explaining fluctuations in construction activities. On the contrary, the magnitude of monetary shock on construction investment is greater in short term. The effects of monetary shock on construction continue little longer than real shock.
