The best confusing moment concerned with historic environment conservation in Korea is to be asked following questions ; "Why should conserve," "What should conserve," "Who should conserve," "How should conserve". Now we are positioned can't find satisfactory answers for questions. In order to overcome this situation, it is necessary to find solutions to fit into our conditions, and to survey and to analyze historic environments thoroughly. In terms of this concerns, this study is focused on "What should conserve".
For this, this study selects Yangdong traditional village and introduces two stages to progress ; the interpretation of village and the extraction of conservation subjects. Ultimately this study tried to interpret its changing process, to understand and find conservation subjects for historic environment conservation.
The steps for interpretation of village are divided into 6 periods ; Chosen period(Appearance/Growth), Modern period(Transitions/Alteration), Present period(Stagnation/Adaptation). In the each period, distinct phases are found with a shift of the times.
And conservation subjects which have been extracted from the village interpretation are divided into two sectors ; physical resources and non-physical resources. It is predicted that some particular attributes in the village(e. g. attributes in subordinate relation, change process, life order and legislation) and the realistic condition inside or outside of the village are to be operated as more important factors than the simple physical resources like nature, human/social and historical/cultural resources.
