The Jeonju region has been characterized by contineous decrease of population and a relative decline of share in gross national products, resulting in an overall stagnation of socio-economic situation. In order to reverse the on-going trend which seems not in favor of the Jeonju region, there have not been without concerted effort on the parts of national and provincial governments. It has not, however, worked as expected to be. A strong sense of limit to planning and frustration is to be seen. It is thought that time has come for the Jeonju region to search for a new strategy which might be different from conventional planning wisdoms in its development orientation and tactics. A new approach to the development of the Jeonju region such as the restructuring of regional spatial integration along the Kum River, the creation of regional research triangle including Jeonju and Taejeon, escape from enigmatic regionalism and the concretization of popular concept of 'the era of western coast' is discussed.
