The noise of urban outdoor areas is mostly from traffics. But traffics can't be eliminated in daily life as they are closly related to the urban activities.
At present, prevention for urban areas, particularly residental areas, is not seriously taken account in urban planning process.
The aim of this study is to demonstrate methods to reduce the traffic noise in residental areas. One of them is to change the noise transmission system or route between noise sources and receivers. Buffer zones can be built to absorb the traffic noise, or sound barrier can be set up to reduce the noise. Sound barriers in residential ar-as can be a simple noise barrier or tall buildings around the residential block.
The result of the study shows that a significant reduction of noise level can be achieved when some form of protective device are implemented in residental areas.
