The purpose of this study is to find out the some characteristics concerning the principles and techniques for spatial organization of the walled cities in Korea, and other Eastern and Western countries. In this paper, especially, various aspects of urban planning or design are considered in connection with principles and detailed techniques in the followings :
1) conspectus on the transition of urban spatial structure in the Far East Asia,
2) consideration of the basic principles in regard to orientation, meaning of space and place in traditional society, site condition and its layout, division and allocation of central functional area(inner city),
3) identification and comparison on the techniques of spatial design such as symbolic vs visual axis, symmetrical vs asymmetrical composition, public vs private domains, trisection and quatering in urban land subdivision, street system and block module, etc.
