This study intended to find out some clues for the tendency about vertical locational requirements of various activities which are usually found in urban C.B.D. area.
All buildings, big and small, high and low, facing to main busy streets in so-called downtown area in Seoul, are surveyed in terms of kinds and number of occupying activities. Finally 181 kinds of various businesses, services and facilities are classified into 72 activities which will be the basic analytic elements of this study and further they are also bundled into 11 functional groups including miscellaneous one for the reference.
Through the present pattern of vertical location, the inclination of an activity to locate at a desirable floor when it has an exclusive chance, though competitive within itself but not against others, would happen with the provability shown, it terms of per centage, as T-4 and Fig.-2.
Vertical-ocational requirement of activities, when many other activities who want to locate at certain same floor are competing each other, are calculated applying similar way to calculate the "location quotient". These figures and configulations, T-5 and Fig.-3, are the index of comparative degree of strength about the vertical locational requirement of certain activity to a certain floor.
Additionally, an idea of vertical space and activity organization matrix is proposed as Fig.-4, from the view point of location requirement of each activity, for a complex building becoming popular in this country and downtown as a whole whose vertical floor use has usually been determined, by the developer as well as the user, through a rent or price mechanism.
