The purpose of study is to examine the problems resulting from a rapid increasing use of Street-furniture and suggest the improvement plan of Street-furniture. By examining Street-furniture around Woo-A-Dong in the city of Jeon-Ju, this study analyzes the problems of Street-furniture in function, passage, and view, and the problems obtained from a interview with administrative authorities for installation, management and occupancy permission.
The following causal elements resulting in hindering pedestrian and making the quality of streetscape low are found : 1) in a viewpoint of layout, dead space made by integration of Street-furniture into a specific place and inappropriate density and place subjectively planned by authorities ; 2) in a viewpoint of administration, insolvent management of records and materials for Street-furniture and weak regulation to illegal occupancy ; and 3) in a viewpoint of design, nation-wide uniformity of ready-made Street-furniture and disharmony of intensive Street-furniture.
To solve the problems mentioned above, this study suggests the systems for cooperation and adjustment among the authorities for intensive Street-furniture installation near intersections and bus stops, which are able to make them responsible for road manage consistently Street-furniture and create positive characteristics of region through the integration of design.
