Recently, it has been conceived that the aesthetic experience of one's environment has psychological bases and resides in the relationship between an individual and his or her environment. This study tests the visual preference and image of buildings in resort complexes. As a method, the 53 color-slide surrogates for buildings were selected from 11 resorts in Korea, and are shown to 223 students in the various majors. The respondents judged the preference and image along a 7-point Likert type scale from ‘strongly dislike’ to ‘strongly like’ and a 7-point semantic-differential of the 18 pair-adjective. It was found that, the preference of buildings in resorts was closely related to ‘height, ratio of height and length, shape of roof, material, and overall atmosphere'. The high preference buildings showed rural characteristics, but the low preference buildings showed urban characteristics. Also, the high preference buildings showed the image of ‘unique’, ‘exciting’, ‘interesting’, ‘spacious’, ‘open’, ‘cheerful’, ‘welcoming’, ‘comfortable’, ‘continuous’, ‘traditional’, ‘delightful’, ‘pleasing’, and ‘natural’ with the low preference buildings. The implication of this study is that successful buildings' planning and design of resort development will occur only when the rural and natural characteristics and images are accommodated.
