Recently, growing interest is concentrated on the conservation of nature due to the destruction of the urban ecosystem. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate and evaluate biotope to develop a city harmonized with the man and the nature. Recently, the concept of green plan or ecopolis plan is established to preserve and develop existing natural habitat, biotope. Considerable amount of research has been done concerning biotope abroad. However, there is few research activity in Korea. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the status and present research situation in foreign countries. In this paper, the author reviewed the methodology of biotope based upon the Berlin case and analyzed some research papers published in Korea.
The conclusion can be drawn as follows:
1. In Korea, major interest about biotope is focussed upon the establishment of new biotope to induce organisms such as insects. And the methodology is largely based upon technical approach, which is short-term oriented with narrow scope. Moreover, this kind of approach could damage the existing biotope because the survey of ecosystem and its charateristics has not been performed beforehand.
2. In the other hand, in Berlin, a systematic approach is performed to preserve species diversity, in the city based upon a reasonal theoretical background. Further, they do a sufficient survey before establshing a biotope and judge which biotope should be preserved and which biotope needs improvement leading to the preservation of the nature in a city.
3. It is desirable to use a comprehensive and long-term oriented approach rather than to use a partial short-term oriented appoach in Korea based upon a systematic biotope methodology and case studies. Natural habitat should be preserved intact and improved in its quality to make a city harmonized with the man and the organism, and the biotope should be established in a proper location. For this purpose, the investigation about the ecosystem, the decent classification of land use and the categorization of biotope should be preceded to achieve a species diversity.
