Telecommunication demand has been increasing over all the industries recently. Industries such as manufacturing and Construction are important part of the telecommunication sector. However, their telecommunication demand increased in relation to production increase rather than industry's structural changes. Yet telecommunication demand in the services industry, agriculture, fisheries, and mining industries accompanied the industries structural changes. One of the noticeable thing is that the services industry was influenced largely by the increase in productivity of the telecommunication sector. In the furture, we believe that the telecommunication sector will be a major link to connect services industry and manufacturing industry. The authors assume that telecommunication in the services and manufacturing industries is very important.
This study discusses the following policy issues:
First, there will be telecommunication congestion which is same as the Social Overhead Capital (SOC)as we see in current Korean situation, if the government loses its chance to invest in the telecomunication in terms of timing and proper facilities;
Second, urban telecommunication projects are summarized in two aspects. One is that telecommunication investment from the private sector is increasing as time goes. An other aspect is that there will be a great demand for the telecommunication enhanced buildings such as what is known as intelligent buildings, smart buildings and teletopia concept of buildings. These are future trends when we consider private sector investment capability and their needs; and,
Third, the authors conclude that these telecommunication related urban development projects (e.g., intelligent buildings) will happen in central business districts around the major urban center initially. Later on these types of buildings will be built in research and academic centered towns as well as technology based industrial districts. This development is based on increasing functional demand of the Industry and research communities.
