The purpose of this study is to improve qualities and environment of residence in the apartments, and to contrive utilization of underground space. The subject of study is restricted to basement floor of residence building with more than two hundred dwelling units in Kwangju city. This study is to investigate the actual usage of underground space in the apartments, to grasp problems through the instances of the apartments and then try to seek the betterment schemes, and to present the devices of the utilization of underground space and its management.
The results of questionnaires show that most residents want to utilize basement floors for convenient facilities and that the problems which require improvements are environmental problems such as ventilation, illumination, and daylight etc.
The possibilities of utilization of underground space for other purposes should be considered at the beginning of design, and its positive and multi-purpose utilization should be fully studied for the improvement of convenience and amenity of residential functions.
