Due to the functional characteristics of performing arts centers, which need several inter-related speciality areas, the conditions of good centers cannot be achieved if any one speciality area is insufficient or unsatisfactory. Accordingly, when constructing performing arts centers, the role of the advisory committee, which is comprised of experts of different fields, as well as the role of consultants controlling each field, are important from the initial stage of the construction planning. However, most of the existing performing arts centers in Korea have been built by the same processes as those applied to the construction of other buildings with different functions. As a result, the development of construction processes has been slow and difficult compared with the rapid progress made in construction technologies. In this research, the functional characteristics of performing arts centers were investigated from the aspects of construction and operation, and the factors affecting the planning stage of performing arts centers were derived. Additionally, by analyzing the relationship among the factors, the construction planning processes, from the planning stage of construction to the beginning stage of an architectural design, were suggested.
