The relationship between form and function in architecture has been continuously questioned for a long time. This study was motivated by a question, "does a form, which fits a specific function, have its relative independence?".
In this study, the links between typology in architecture and urban formation were focused, in order to explore the roles and the effects of the relationship between the forms and the functions. Modernism before the 1960's emphasized the importance of functionalism, and it caused a lot of problems in the urban environments. Thus, the typological approach, which accentuated typical forms, appeared as an alternative, focusing on urban typology and the effects of "Piece urbaine (a type of a city)". This research examined the typological characteristics and effects in the process, by looking at the residential areas in newly-formed cities and downtown areas of Europe.
