Recently, the import of steels has increased, with the larger size and scale of buildings and the higher demand of steels, However, Korean laws and regulations do not specify the technical standards for those imported steels. The indefinite standards for quality management and the inadequate specifications of imported steels make it difficult for builders and supervisors at a construction site to make a correct decision. This study was conducted to investigate the consumption patterns of imported steels and the relevant cases in other countries, to find a way to ensure the structural performance and safety of imported materials by examining their compositions and structural properties, and to propose some improvement measures in construction systems. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1) an originality certification system shall be introduced to clearly control the commercial distribution of imported steels 2) an originality certificate shall be provided in a construction site where imported steelsare used because the on-site examination of their mechanical properties and composition is limited; 3) the laws and regulations for ensuring the safety and quality insurance shall be expanded to low rise multi-story structures.
