The study departs from the desire of reconsidering the signification of today's landmark and its function in today's urban space. In this study, we investigate the role and function of urban landmark in today's city space that has been being expanded on the basis of the development of network system. Then, the discussion develops into the exploration on the cognition of landmarks in the contemporary city space and the study finally examine the new possibility of landmarks as an interactive surface(or skin) in today's urbanism, which has adopted such an open system as based on the network. The particular argument is focused on the relationship between the conceptual change of the 'public' and the role of landmarks in the open system-oriented contemporary city.
