The purpose of this article is to examine the poetic space and its correlation with utterance of Kim Hyun-seong(Dahyung)'s poetry, focused on A Prayer in Autumn. Kim, Hyun-seong's poems have a classical form. They are very general and ordinary. But his poems give deep impression and emotional echo to readers. It can be explained that he is making the spatial world in his poetry.
We can find a dual world composed of the ground and the heaven in A Prayer in Autumn. In this poem, prayer is a formula that a man on the ground speak to god in the heaven. Autumn is the time the man faces with god. And the prayer is to talk with god. In the season people are drived out. Only god exists in the world. Persona in the poem his wishes tells god in autumn. They are prayer, love and solitude. He could not achieve them in the past, and now in autumn, he wishes something serious they are achieved by god. In the poem, the ground shows aspects of association, spaciousness, and lowness. The heaven shows aspects of solitude, narrowness, and highness.
The heaven has the image of solidity, while the ground has image of liquidity. Autumn(winter), fruits, dried branches of a tree, and a crow show the solidity of the heaven. Here all life is eliminated and suspended. On the contrary, spring(summer), flowers, sea, and a lily show the liquidity of the ground. They mean living power and movement. Persona wishes that the solidity of the heaven is accomplished on the ground by prayer.
In this poem, vertical space-structure is related with the poet's attitude of speech. Prayer is the only channel to god, thus it dreams of magic power. Language used in prayer is vertical turn on god and the heaven. Vertical language is not a manner of lively, emotional and rhetorical speech. It is a manner of dried and tense speech. Eventually languages turn upon the heaven, fall to the grounds and enter the inside of persona. He wants to attain the world of prayer, love, solitude in his inside, although it is not perfect. Winter, black colour, solitude, fruits, and jewels frequently appear in Kim Hyun-seong's poems. They are the representations of the heaven that he finds out on the grounds.
