In case of South Korea, the leftists have been excluded and distorted until a recent date. However, they get the good chance for expanding their social power currently. Recognizing theses situations, it attempts to analysis ‘the actuality’ of the leftists in South Korea, focusing on their general principles and positions. Firstly, it makes a distinction between the concept of left and of progress which often make theoretical disorder but are used together in real life. This study tries to define the concept of left as ‘the orientation to socialism’ in short. To be sure, this concept is applied as the means for drawing the leftists in South Korea. Then this study researches the ‘substance’ of them, depending on the criteria of the viewpoint on ‘an alternative social structure’, ‘a civil social movement’, and ‘North Korea’. In the Conclusion, it advocates that the leftists in South Korea generally prefer socialism rather than capitalism and are not ‘proa civil society’, ‘pro-North Korea’. And it proposes that they are required to establish their influence as a political party for the ‘normalization of politics’ in South Korea.
