The Civilizational Paradigm in Post-Cold War International Studies suggests using "civilization" as a new framework for analysis. This paradigm contributes to scholarly analysis of international is sues too large to treat using the traditional framework of analysis. i.e., the nation-state, but also of cultural issues too small to treat at the level of the nation-state. Samuel Huntington's civilizational paradigm is different from that of Francis Fukuyama. Though much ink has been spilled over the putative eurocentrism of Huntington. Huntington recognizes the raison d'etre of plural standards of civilizations, unlike Fukuyama's singular civilizational paradigm of monocentric diffusion, which has become the epistemic basis of neoconservative foreign policy of the U.S.
Harald Muller's paradigm of civilizational co-existence contains some pertinent critique of Huntington. Muller's concept of civilizational co-existence, however. can be made compatible with Huntington's paradigm through revision of the latter. But compatibility of Muller's concept with Fukuyama's civilizational paradigm of monocentric diffusion is impossible because Fukuyama does not recognize different standards of civilization. In opposition to Fukuyama, Andre Gunder Frank argues for the 'reorient' of civilizational paradigm. Frank's book makes clear the limits of Fukuyama's paradigm. Nonetheless, the Orient in which Frank is searching for a new exit after his dependency theory is an Orient too mystified.
