Arsenic is a serious problem in abandoned mine area, specially in the forms of acid mine drainage and leachate from mine tailings. Cationic metals including cadmium, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc have been treated by hydroxide precipitation and sulfide precipitation using sulfate reducing bacteria. However, oxyanionic metals including arsenic and Cr(VI) have not treated after pH change and wetlands. Recently, removal of arsenic is a hot issue in the abandoned mine area in Korea. In this study, the characteristics of arsenic removal were investigated using iron coated sand(ICS). ICS consists of sand grains coated with ferric hydroxide which are used in fixed bed reactors to remove various metal species. The metal ions are exchanged with the surface hydroxides on the ICS. The effects of pH and competing ions on arsenic removal by ICS were studied using batch sorption kinetic and sorption isotherms and fixed bed experiments. In the presence of competing ions such as sulfate, ICS showed high sorption capacity. ICS could be a good sorption material for arsenic for the treatment of acid mine drainage and leachate from mine tailings.
