This paper aims at inquiring into correlations between Epic theatre and Madanggeuk, as we study Madanggeuk The Story of Deoksangol performed by the theatrical company called ‘Handure’.
Madanggeuk was begun to settle social problems with theatrical practice, and made a define aesthetic model from the forms of a folk play or a traditional performance in the early days. But Madanggeuk has been continuing self-development, with repeating aesthetic self-reflection. In this process, Madanggeuk seemed to insert the part of epic dramatic factors. The epic theatre theory invented by Brecht is theatrical techniques urging us to awakening and practice by destructing realistic dramatics on the purpose.
To certify this facts, we analyzed Madanggeuk The Story of Deoksangol which has more epic dramatic techniques relatively. In this result, we could conform that the epic theatre has the similarity of ideal characteristics with Madanggeuk in respect of realistic participation will and practice. And we could also conform that they have the positive similarity in respect of Alienation effect(Verfremdungseffekte) and openness.
In a word, Madanggeuk doesn't remain in realistic participation or convention regression without self-aesthetics but conform self-aesthetics by accepting futuristic theory including the epic theatre.
