Discussing Korean-American relationship after the Korean War from the perspective of postcolonialism presents some thorny problems. That is because the colonized Korea was liberated from Japan with the aid of American military force and since then, Korea has been protected from and dependent on the world superpower America. This situation has deeply affected Korean people and as a consequence, many Koreans have identified Americanization with modernization. In short, South Korea has become a new colony of American culture, economy, and politics.
The history of Korean modern art after the War has also been the history of assimilation to and emulation of the Western art, and many artists have been very sensitive and receptive to the mainstream art in America. The first modern art movement in Korea ‘Korean Informel’ for instance, was formed with the influence of American Abstract Expressionism. On the other hand, the Minjoong Art in the 1980’s was motivated by the strong anti-colonial and anti-American sentiment.
‘Korean Informer’ is an example of cultural hybrid and assimilation and Minjoong Art, of nationalism. But interpreting the so-called first ‘Korean Informer’ 〈No. 1〉 by Park Seobo visavis Pollock’s 〈No. 1〉 as a positive example of Homi Bhabha’s metonimical mimicry poses problems because Bhabha’s theory is ambiguous and is not clear if the mimicry is a means of conscious resistance to colonization. Furthermore, Park could not have been self-conscious of the issue because the work was his very first try in the new style.
Minjoong Art on the other hand contributed a good deal to the anti-colonial discourse in art, but by representing America as a viscious other it poses the problem of xenophoebic nationalism as well. Assimilation without critical attitude is as harmful as exclusive nationalism, and postcolonial discourse on Korean modern art should negotiate these extreme positions.
