This study was conducted not only to evaluate the design characteristics of urban building from business facilities in Daegu's downtown area but also to identify Daegu's own characteristics of urban building. For the purpose of this study, 39 office buildings which were located on the roadsides of main streets within the downtown area of Daegu were selected. A field survey was carried out from September 23 to 29, 2005, and the SPSS, a statistical software, was used for analysis.
The design characteristics of Daegu's office buildings are summarized as follows.
The most common types of the office buildings appeared to be the box type of vertical lamination, the single type of horizontal connection, the irregular type of creation, and the plane type of repeated arrangement. Both plane type and geometric type have also been being combined with each other in order to promote diversification of mass type. It was analyzed that the office buildings in the Daegu area were environment-friendly and put greater emphasis on harmony with urban landscape as well as economical efficiency. Judging from exterior finish materials and expression types, most of the office buildings in the Daegu area used glass and granite as exterior finish materials in order to emphasize their functionality, and highlighted their design characteristics by applying the proximity principle of materials. In terms of colors used in the buildings, the effect of colors on decorative characteristics of buildings could be identified.
