Nowadays we can find the increasing awareness and interesting of stories(narratives), especially oral folktales occupied attention of the research of the locality. Oral literature has some remarkable traits in contrast with the written literature and other art form. The oral folktales have archetypal imaginations and that are made and transmitted in the local environment(material and moral culture, history, circumstance … etc.) thus to study oral folktale helps to discover the new way in concerned today's various cultural demands, exactly locality of the cultural tradition and imaginations of local resident.
The tales of Lee Seongkye(the first king of Joseon dynasty) are distributed widely throughout the Korea. The noted types of the these tales are ‘Hero's struggle and triumph over adversity’, ‘the destiny to become the king(dream, prophecy, a good omen, etc)’, ‘God and other helper's assistance and support.’ These tales have common motifs which belong to the pattern of ‘Hero's life story’, however the emphasis of tales of Lee is not a display of the heros' own ability or power but a support or good fortune. That is most likely to the result of Lee's historical career; Lee has two persona, one is the first King of the Joseon dynasty, other the traitor to the Goryeo Dynasty. Lee could feel keenly the necessity of getting the validity to become the King of the new country.
However these tales of Lee are not found in South Jeolla province. This province's antipathy against Lee and central government has been figured as ‘King Lee banished Jirisan from Gyeongsang-do to Jeolla-do’. In addition that case, there are Mudeungsan's objection to Lee's taking the throne, the existence other hero, Uturi. Futhermore really South Jella province had a tying experience, historic firsthand information and dread result in absence of the Lee's tale.
