CDC (Carbide Derived Carbon) coatings produced with chlorine and hydrogen ratio of about 2:1 had high hardness and Young's modulus. Commercial SiC balls were exposed to Ar-Cl₂ and Ar-Cl₂H₂ gas mixtures at temperatures of 800-1200℃. As was predicted, the interaction of silicon carbide with Ar-5% Cl₂-2.5% H₂ gas at high temperatures resulted in the formation of carbon (CDC). EDX results of the coated SiC ball surface showed a considerable atomic % increase (almost 99%) of the carbon phase and CDC formation up to 15 ㎛ in thickness. Compared to the uncoated SiC samples, samples with CDC structure had a relatively lower friction coefficient, which was greatly reduced to about 0.1~0.2, and better wear resistance in air condition. This is because the carbon yield was increased with temperature. This result agrees with Raman spectra analysis results and other studies of the coatings which show mixed sp²-sp³ bonding.
