This study was performed to compare the panic disorder patients with and without agoraphobia. The study was focused on the features and numbers of panic symptoms during panic attacks and the degree of patient's cognitive appraisal of panic attack. The study subjects were 29 patients who visited Kyungpook National University Hospital from March, 1996 to May, 1997, meeting the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria of panic disorder with and without agoraphobia by two psychiatric residents' interviews. These patients were instructed to do self-reporting on Korean version of panic phenomenology questionnaire for the assessment of the features and numbers of panic symptoms during panic attacks. They were also instructed to report on the Korean version of Panic Appraisal Inventory for the assessment of the degree of patient's cognitive appraisal of panic attack. The results were as follows.
1) During panic attack, the specific symptom that was more frequent in the group of panic disorder with agoraphobia(92.9%) than the group of panic disorder without agoraphobia(53.3%) was rapid breathing(p<0.05l).
2) The number of panic symptoms during panic attack had no statistically significant differences between both groups.
3) In PAI-Anticipated Panic, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups as a whole. But mean score of the items - riding a crowded train or bus, taking a sauna or steam bath was high with statistical significance in the group of panic disorder with agoraphobia(p<0.05).
4) In PAI-Panic Consequences, there were no statistically significant differences between both groups as a whole as well as in each item.
5) In PAI-Panic Coping, there were no statistically significant differences between both groups as a whole. But in the Item of "I can control my panic attacks without taking medication.", the group of panic disorder without agoraphobia had higher scores with statistical significance than the group of panic disorder with agoraphobia.
