For the past 15 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Russia the economic relations of the two countries have shown considerable progress, but it is difficult to say that the economic cooperation system between the ROK and Russia -- particularly in the RFE -- is working.
In the early 1990’s, many Korean companies had great interest in investment cooperation with Russia, in particular with the Russian Far East (RFE). Russia probably also expected the ROK to be a good economic partner that would invest in her economic development. Unfortunately, the two countries received only disappointment from each other, mainly due to poor Russian economic conditions and a lacking market economy system.
However, with the progress of the Russian economy, the economic conditions for foreign companies in the RFE cannot but improve, as was the case in the Moscow region in the 1990’s. Thus, although the present investment climate in the RFE is not entirely attractive, Korean companies are expected to approach the RFE for long-term prospects.
