Tom Stoppard's recent play Arcadia(1993), which has been hailed by many as the most brilliant and fascinating play he has ever written, is both a story of two young researchers in the present to find out what really happened in Sidley Park in the year 1809, and an intellectual discourse about a number of scientific, mathematical and philosophical arguments. Unlike his earlier Jumpers(1972) or Travesties(1976), Arcadia not only plays with perplexing ideas but also engages the audience in warm emotion.
One of the most outstanding features of the play is the author's technique of displaying contrasting time, ideas and characters on the stage. We are in two time-frames: 1809, when the age of Enlightenment was giving way to the age of Romanticism, when the Byronic escapade might or might not have happened, and 1993, when two contrasting characters, Hannah Jarvis and Bernard Nightingale, come to Sidley Park for their research. The contrasting ideas discussed in the play are: Newtonian determinism vs. free will, Classicism vs. Romanticism, order vs. disorder, science vs. art, intellect vs. emotion, intellectual desire vs. sexual desire, true history vs. imagined past, and so on.
Stoppard tries to deal with so many ideas such as Chaos theory, the second law of thermodynamics, entropy, Newtonian physics, etc. in a play that the result seems to be chaos itself. Nevertheless, as there is a pattern in the chaotic world, so is there an order in this chaotic play. Stoppard shows us that though the world seems to be fragmentary and chaotic what is at work is the human ambition for knowledge. This chaotic world of Arcadia is Stoppard's brilliant metaphor for the postmodern world which is neither too gloomy nor highly promising, our world of "room temperature."
