In Krapp's Last Tape, the hero Krapp has the will to regenerate his own identity. In regenerating past youth and dreams by tape in a state of loneliness and alienation, he pursues his ambitions for the present and future, and tries to find a chance of recovering life that is fading away, but only to be frustrated. Krapp, who remains so old and decrepit, ridicules the limitations of the loss of self. This play reveals the duality of human limitations through the contrastive images of light and darkness, through which the duality of the human situation is presented. Krapp strives to regain his energetic, hopeful former self from a weak and withered present state, but such an effort remains to be solved in the empty rolling tape.
The tragic and comic elements in Beckett's tragicomedy don't happen one after the other but occur in a balanced unity of the two elements, where neither destroys but rather enhances the other, that is, comic elements intensify tragic elements and vice versa. The universe and human situation shown in Beckett's dramas are indeed much more uncertain and melancholy than those of traditional dramas, but the double vision which maintains natural balance and harmony overcomes various paradoxes and obstacles in the hope and conviction of a tomorrow, and shows the world a tragicomic vision.
