Korean drama in 1950s after Korean War shows a tendency toward modern drama due to budding playwrights who make an partial experiment. 〈The Locomotive living on a Flower〉 written by Lim Hee-Jae becomes a good example as a modified realistic drama.
Especially, this drama draws public attention by having something in common with 〈The Streetcar Named Desire〉 written by Tennessee Williams. Both drama have a similar structure which shows mysterious woman's life course from her return to her restart. They also have a same symbolic traits in character, theme, stage etc.
But we can't speak ill of 〈The Locomotive~〉 as it is simple imitation of 〈The Streetcar～〉. 〈The Locomotive～〉 has more diverse character relationships than 〈The Streetcar～〉 and makes the development and process of incident more complicated. It shows middle stratum story in a style of writing. It has both symbolic appearance and melodramatic substance.
Internally, Lim Hee-Jae has indefinite dramaturgy including ambiguity of meaningness at his command.
For that reason, 〈The Locomotive～〉 is significant as typical drama among postwar dramas which has traits coexisting reality and symbol, interest and vagueness.
