Existing Liquefied Natural Gas evaporators use the indirect contact heat transfer mode where the extreme low temperature LNG of -162℃ flows inside of the tubes and the 20~30℃ sea water flows on outside of the tubes. But this indirect contact heat exchangers provide a low heat transfer efficiency and have many problems in their applications, such as. material fatigue caused by high differential temperature between the two fluids, material corrosion, erosion by the chloride of sea water and micro-biologic attacking. etc. In order to solve these problems. the use of direct contact heat exchanger is proposed. because it does not have any structures within the spray column. It may also be expected to give high heat transfer performance dramatically.
Therefore, this study makes observations on the fluid dynamic characteristics such as bubbling, icing, sudden expansion phenomena and water content in the produced natural gases. The investigations were carried out for the fixed water flow rate of 10t/min with water height in the column(500㎜), The LNG flow rates of 0.12t/min, 0.36t/min, 0.6t/min and the pressures of 100㎪, 300㎪, 500㎪ were utilized for their effects.
The results of this investigation show that as the pressure increased, the bubbles became small and uniform throughout the column, and the frequency became high with less mole % of water content in the gas. It was observed that the increase of the LNG flow rates also gave less mole % of water content in the gas.
