Long shanny, Stichaeus grigorjewi Herzenstein (Pisces, Perciformes, Zoarcoidei) is distributed off the coastal waters from the Sea of Okhotsk to the East Sea of Korea through the coastal sea of Hokkaido. Adult size of the fish is over 50 ㎝ in total length and 500 g in body weight. They are caught mainly by gill nets during the winter season and are regarded as valuable food fish in Korea.
To investigate the influence of temperature on the growth and survival during seedling production process, two rearing experiments were conducted. For experiment 1, newly-hatched larvae were stocked at three different temperature tanks (11.2℃, 15.3℃, and 20.9℃ in mean water temperature) and reared for 5 months. The final growth and survival of the fish at 15.3℃ were superior to the other two treatments (P<0.05). Survival rates of each treatment were 9.72%, 18.76%, 6.82%, respectively. The regression relations of total length (TL) against time in days after hatching (D) were as follows ;
TL=8.49712 e^(0.01163D) (r²=0.74332) at 11.2℃
TL=8.71417 e^(0.01399D) (r²=0.87859) at 15.3℃
TL=7.55245 e^(0.01323D) (r²=0.84052) at 20.9℃
For experiment 2, ten-day old larvae (mean total length : 9.5 ㎜) were reared at five different temperatures (13℃, 15℃, 17℃, 19℃ and 21℃) from March 4 to May 4, 1994. Maximum growth (19.3 ㎜ in total length) was obtained at the 17.0℃ group whereas survival rate was highest (28.9%) at 15.0℃. Regression relations of body length (BL, ㎜), body height (BH, ㎜), and body weight (BW, ㎎) against the total length (TL, ㎜) of fingerling (smaller than 55 ㎜) long shanny are as follows ;
BL=0.7961TL+0.1605 (r²=0.9855)
BH=0.0977TL+0.2339 (r²=0.9324)
BW=0.0005TL^(3.8467) (r²= 0.9564)
