This paper analysed the narration structure, contents, and dramatic techniques of A Virgin Selling Flowers, a revolution-opera and compared the opera with the adapted movie A Virgin Selling Flowers.
The similarities of the two works are summarized as follows.
First, the works both showed the similar narration contents. The basic story of the works included a revolution success through the citizens' class awakening under the Japanese Colonial period from the end of the 1920s to the beginning of 1930s.
Second, the works used similar dramatic stage crafts.
Ggokbun(꽃분)'s house symbolized a dramatic space of despair, poverty, and separation. But Bae landowner(배지주)'s house symbolized a dramatic space of the wealth, oppression, open labour exploitation under the Japanese colonial period. In the end Ggokbun's house was changed into a place of a successful battle but Bae's house, a place of defeat by the revolutionary movements.
Third, the works showed a identical revelation of character
The works showed the character revelation by striking contrasts such as the good and the evil, and the propertied and the unpropertied class, and in the end the unpropertied class accomplished the revolution. The works suggested that the revolutionary movements should be not alternative but automatic, showing the dramatic spaces and the character actions by contrast.
Fourth, the works both used 'jeolga'(절가) as a 'bangchang'(방창) form.
The differences between the two works are as follows.
First, there was a difference between the plot structures and contents.
The revolution-opera used the scenes of dreams as a dramatic device and the movie used the scenes of flashbacks in order to express the characters' experiences of the brutal realities of life. In the movie narration the flashback scenes showed the explanations of the past events, but the scenes of dreams symbolized the future events through the present narration.
The flashback scenes in the movie were expressed by the consecutive cut editing and showed the discontinuation between the scenes, but the scenes of dreams in the opera showed a natural narration movement.
Second, the revolution opera used the higher frequency of song performance.
In the movie character dialogue was used as a main device, and songs, narration, and background music was used as a subsidiary device. But there were frequent song performances in the opera. In the opera A Virgin Selling Flowers, the total numbers of character dialogue were 150 times, while the numbers of song performance were 95 times and the numbers of bangchang performance, which a third singer sings off the stage, were 74 times. With the frequent song performances, it could be insisted that the revolution opera be a sort of North Korea's song play.
Third, there was a difference in the forms of bangchang performance as well.
In the movie A Virgin Selling Flowers there were 17 times of bangchang performing a independent song. But in the opera A Virgin Selling Flowers the bangchang was used to try to sing a song with the characters besides the independent song.
The narration structures, contents, dramatic techniques of the revolution opera have been examined partly. In addition the study of North Korea's five revolution-operas is necessary for the entire analysis of the opera A Virgin Selling Flowers.
