In this study, nucleate pool boiling heat transfer experiments were carried out to examine the effects of an electric field on the performances of plain and four low fin tubes with 10, 19, 29, and 36 fins per inch(fpi). Heat transfer coefficients were measured at 30℃ with CFC11 and HCFC123 working fluids, as is the case in centrifugal chillers. Heat flux condition used was 10-60㎾ 1㎡ and the DC voltage applied was 0-15㎸. The results clearly showed that an optmum fin density exists for the low fin tubes, Without the electric field, the 28fpi tube showed the best performance for both fluids showing about 2.2 times increase in heat transfer coefficients as compared to the plain tube. Howerver, when 15㎸ was applied to the 28fpi tube, 8 to 12times increase in heat transfer coefficients was observed as compared to the plain tube without the electric field. Hence, it can be concluded that by applying electric voltage ot the optimized low fin tubes, 4-5times further heat transfer enhancement was possible, which may be termed "compound heat transfer enhancement effect".
