The object of this study is to develop a high performance evaporator for an automotive air conditioner. The experiment has been conducted on the evaporative heat transfer coefficient inside a plate type heat exchanger with a sharp l80-degree turn flow. The test plates have differently formed surfaces, a cross-ribbed channel and an elliptical-ribbed channel. Also an experimental study has been performed to determine the optimal design in elliptical-ribbed plate heat exchanger with different turn clearances.
In addition to above experiments, refrigerant behaviors with respect to the surface temperature distribution in the current plate and fin type evaporator were investigated using a color infrared thermometer.
In this experiment. R-12 was used as the working fluid and test conditions were as follows; (1) saturation pressure of 207 ㎪, (2) mass fluxes of 40 to 70㎏/㎡s, (3) heat fluxes of 4,500 to 7,300W/㎡, (4) inlet quality of 0.1 to 0.7.
It was found that the evaporative heat transfer coefficient of an elliptical-ribbed plate heat exchanger was higher than that of an angular-ribbed plate heat exchanger. Also the optimal turn clearance in an elliptical-ribbed plate heat exchanger was determined.
