Theoretical and experimental investigations to find the characteristics of pressure drop have been made for various filter elements with different separator heights, filter depths, and average inlet velocities. A filter element with square cross-section was selected as a test model to predict the pressure drop in a separator type filter with a 90˚ pleated angle. The filter element consists of two flow channels enveloped with upstream filter medium, flat filter medium, downstream filter medium, and separator. On the theoretical study, the total pressure drop was calculated by combining the pressure drop generated by the filter medium and the pressure drop generated by friction through the flow channels. On the experimental study, the local pressure drop was measured from the test model.
The results indicate that for a given filter element there is an optimum separator height with a minimum total pressure drop. At higher separator height, the total pressure drop is mainly influenced by the pressure drop due to the filter medium. But, as the filter height decreases, the friction of the flow channels takes more effect to the total pressure drop.
