In traditional wooden structures, it is not simple work to establish the performance criteria due to the properties of the framework leading to weak mechanical capacity of connections. On the one hand, the permanence of wooden structures is decreased because of deterioration of coherence by drying shrinkage and severe variation of the material properties. The key problems of connections of traditional wooden structures are 1) beam has no connection, 2) the perpendicular and horizontal members should be connected at a point(capital) simultaneously, 3) the flexural rigidity against horizontal loads are very weak in the connections of beam and column. Due to defects of the continuity of the arrangement of the perpendicular and horizontal elements, joint connection rigidity is not easily obtained, therefore, if is impossible to build multi-story structure and to design the various plane arrangement.
The purpose of this study is to develope the wooden structure system which is able to construct multi-story and to expand various plane configuration by improving traditional connection system. The experimental study enhanced connection rigidity from the separate beam to column connection system used to the traditional framing method into the continuous beam connection system. The traditional and the developed connections are experimented to compare the flexure and shear performance.
The research verifies the simple and predictable flexural rigidity of semi-rigid beam. When the developed connections are applied to the analysis model the structure is stable for the perpendicular and horizontal force and has the continuity of the perpendicular and horizontal direction. The wooden structures which identify the traditional architecture shows possibility of shape development - various plane configuration and multi-story structure.
