God is the most important poetic subject in Hopkins's poetry. He is not an ambiguous but concrete powerful being which other poets have not imagined to express. Hopkins's God turns away from the devoted believers or uses violence to the rebellious people. But sometimes He shows a firm support filled with love to those who believe and follow the Divinity. That is, He is expressed as a dynamic agent in Hopkins's poetry.
The development of science in 19th century, for example, Theory of Revolution by Charles Darwin, conflicted greatly with religion. It gave a damaging blow to the Christianity, therefore many theologians called Darwin the son of the devil. The society in the late 19th century, the period of industrial revolution and early capitalism, was materialistic and divided into the two nations: the rich and the poor. These social conditions afflicted the pure minded priest Hopkins, to whom his contemporary seemed to be cut from the love of God. God even could be seen as a weak divinity which cannot do anything for that corrupted society.
Hopkins's poetry can be called a record of a struggle with God. This is well expressed in "The Wreck of the Deutschland" and dark sonnets. Hopkins thought that God was turning away from the turbid world. He wanted to see the strong and immanent God who can control the wicked and greedy men. Thus his God is really frightful and powerful in His punishment and love, which is expressed vividly through his excellent technique of imagery or rhythm. His struggle with God is finally overcome through his recognition of Divine Providence, and we can appreciate a kind of beauty in Hopkins's poetic expression of it.
