The purpose of this study is to clarify the function and meaning of '-a/eo jita'(-아/어 지다) in modern Korean.
The major findings of this study are as follows:
First, '-a/eo jita' can be attached to all of the adjectives, but it can be attached to a few of the intransitive verbs and some of the transitive verbs. And '-a/eo jita' always change category from the adjective or the transitive verb to the intransitive verb. Therefore I emphasized that the syntactic function of '-a/eo jita' in modern Korean is intransitivization.
Second, I insisted that '-a/eo jita' is not related to the passive, and it only means "the change of state". To find out the meaning of '-a/eo jita', I investigated the syntactic and semantic relevances between '-a/eo jita' and '-a/eo tteurita'(-아/어 뜨리다).
